The water for the onsen comes from an underground reservoir 1,350 meters below the surface. The water is rich in minerals, particularly iron, and is said to be beneficial to people suffering from heart disease, burns, chronic skin disease, hypertension and atherosclerosis. While the water comes from a hot spring, it is heated before being fed into the baths to make it comfortable for bathing.
