I was able to walk in and head right into the private rotenburo here, but the night afterwards it was packed so I had to settle for the 100yen onsen nearby. I would suggest reservations during the weekend maybe, go during the day to secure a spot and then head back later after dinner...I stayed at the Beppu Youth Hostel right around the corner. Looking up at the stars on a beautiful clear night in a rotenburo = life.

Yamada Bessō is a gorgeous old Ryokan in downdown Beppu. The owners are really nice and you can probably use the beautiful rotenburo privately. You should try it if you're in Beppu.
